HSMAI Puerto Rico Marks 3rd Anniversary and Announces the 1st Annual R.O.A.R. Awards with the Introduction of the Raúl Bustamante Industry Icon Award

The Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Puerto Rico Chapter proudly celebrated its third anniversary, a milestone that reflects its growing role in strengthening the island’s hospitality and tourism industry. Since its inception, HSMAI Puerto Rico has grown into a vital platform for education, networking, and professional recognition, empowering hospitality professionals and positioning Puerto Rico as a destination aligned with global best practices.

The anniversary celebration, held on September 18 at The Royal Sonesta San Juan, brought together leaders from across the sector to reflect on the chapter’s accomplishments and to unveil the upcoming 1st Annual R.O.A.R. Awards. More than a recognition program, the R.O.A.R. Awards represent HSMAI Puerto Rico’s mission in action: to highlight excellence, inspire innovation, and celebrate the individuals and organizations driving the future of hospitality on the island.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Raúl Bustamante Industry Icon Award, a distinction created to honor one of Puerto Rico’s most influential hospitality leaders. With more than four decades of service, Raúl Bustamante has played a pivotal role in elevating Puerto Rico as a premier travel destination. Currently General Manager of the Royal Sonesta San Juan and Chairman of Discover Puerto Rico’s Board of Directors, his career spans leadership positions at the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association, Caribe Hilton, and Conrad Condado Plaza. Known for mentoring future leaders and consistently raising industry standards, he has been recognized multiple times as “Hotelier of the Year.” This award, bearing his name, will be reserved for those who embody the same vision, integrity, and commitment to excellence.
